Tuesday – Pirate day – design a pirate flag and learn about the history of pirate flags
Wednesday – hanging decorative fish, similar to carp kites, using brown paper bags and tissue streamers
Thursday – watercolor outdoors at the wharf, weather permitting

Monday – Chinese landscape painting (examples will be shown)

Wednesday – pen and ink techniques
Thursday –Pirate day – making a treasure map.
Friday –4th of July flags. The kids will get to design their own version of the American flag
and they will learn about the different versions of the flag that have existed throughout history.

Wednesday – pottery designs (Greece)
Thursday – Aboriginal art (Australia)
Friday – masks (from around the world)
Art inspired by other artists – exploring various painting and drawing styles
Monday –splatter painting, with Jackson Pollock as inspiration. It’s a messy project, so wear old clothes!
Tuesday – dot painting (pointillism) with George Seurat as inspiration
Wednesday – blind contour drawing, with abstract art like Picasso as inspiration
Thursday – abstract watercolors, with Kandinsky, etc as inspiration
Friday – pop art, with Andy Warhol and Lichtenstein as inspiration
Monday – creature puppets
Tuesday – Faux stained glass
Wednesday – Crazy creatures! The kids will take turns contributing
to each other’s drawings.
This is a fun group activity that inspires creativity and helps the
children to engage each other in conversation.
Thursday – geometric abstract art – the kids will learn about artist Piet Mondrian
and make a picture in his style.
Friday – watercolor outdoors at the wharf, weather permitting
July 28 – August 1 - Art inspired by other artists – exploring various painting and drawing styles
Monday – Michelangelo – After being shown some examples of Michelangelo’s work,
the kids will be introduced to images of The Sistine Chapel.
The kids will work together to make their own ceiling painting.
Large sheets of paper will be taped to the underside
of the tables and the kids will work together to make their own “ceiling paintings”.
Teamwork and brainstorming will be encouraged so that the kids have fun working together.
Tuesday – Henri Matisse - after being introduced to Matisse’s work,
the kids will be encouraged to create an original picture that is inspired by Matisse’s style.
Wednesday – Claude Monet – after being introduced to Monet’s work,
the kids will be encouraged to create an original painting that is inspired by Monet’s style and impressionism.
Thursday – Vincent Van Gogh – after being introduced to Van Gogh’s work,
the kids will be encouraged to create an original painting that is inspired by Van Gogh’s style.
Friday – Gustav Klimt - after being introduced to Klimt’s work,
the kids will be encouraged to create an original painting that is inspired by Klimt’s style.
Monday – marbleized paper – this is a version of marbleized paper that is much easier for children to do than the traditional method. All one needs are a few rectangular bins of water, colored chalk, scissors, and white paper. This project has proved quite popular when I’ve done it with children in previous years.
Tuesday – folding accordion books – these books are a take off on origami paper folding. The children would be able to use some of the marbleized paper that they made the previous day, if they so desired.
Wednesday - Patchwork quilts – The children will be shown examples of traditional American quilts and then construct their own versions out of paper. It will give them a chance to learn about creating geometric patterns.
Thursday – paper mosaics, using construction paper, any marbleized paper that is left from earlier in the week, magazines, newspapers, etc. Proper planning and attention to detail will be encouraged.
Friday – Art with tissue paper, in the style of children’s book artist Eric Carle.
August 11 – 15 - Arts from Japan
Monday – Gyataku…japanese fish prints, bring a white t-shirt to print on.
Tuesday - origami tsuru – cranes and cups
Wednesday – sumi-e ink painting , learn some Kangi (Japanese character letters)
Thursday – Hokusai’s “Great Wave” painting
Friday – origami kiku: boxes & flowers
August 18 – 22
Monday – batik, wax painting & dyeing on paper.
Tuesday – scrimshaw (traditional Vineyard carving in plaster, not whale bone!)
Wednesday – make a lantern for tonight’s Illumination Night in OB!
Thursday – styrofoam printmaking
Friday – Paul Klee, “scratch art”
August 22 – 29
Monday – handmade papermaking/paper pulp paintings
Tuesday – Monet’s lily pond, watercolor painting
Wednesday – drawing the human face
Thursday – watercolor wax resist painting
Friday – decorative rock paperweights
