WILLIAM
ABBÉ
1916-1983
William
"Bill" Abbé was artist-in-residence and
teacher at St. Paul's School, Concord, NH, for 32 years
until retiring in 1981. His summers and retirement were
spent in Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard where he maintained
a studio. From 1940 to 1943, Bill served as an illustrator
for the U.S. Army in Ft. Monroe, VA, until going to Europe
in 1944. During his lifetime, he traveled twice around
the world and recorded his impressions in sketch books,
paintings, prints and photographs.
While
at the Rectory School, Pomfret, CT, Bill studied under
Beatrice Stevens , a well-known Pomfret artist, who first
descovered and nurtured his talent. He pursued his art
studies at Avon Old Farms School and the Yale Drama School;
studied graphic design with Sternberg at the Art Students
League, NY; and graduated from Columbia University with
an art education degree.
Major
exhibitions have been held at the New Britain Museum of
American Art, New Britain, CT; the Red Barn Gallery, West
Tisbury, MA; St. Paul's School; and the Library of Congress'
National Exhibit of Prints (1950). Bill was a life member
of the Students League.
